I should not have one typo with a correcting Selectric-II, if I read what I type as I type!

Well as usual my digital imaging device left me down, but there is an advantage. If I'd have grabbed my 35mm or any of my film cameras I would not have been able to record the video. My OMD however does not use film so there is no, zip, none, nothing, footage. There is about a one minute video file uploaded so hopefully my one video YouTube channel link works.

One of the things I hate is lithium batteries improperly designed into anything especially my portable radios and digital imaging equipment. I'll take NiCad batteries and keep them maintained over Lithium any day. And for those who think there is no pollution with Lithium, search the huge hazardous waste lakes that are created in the mining and manufacturing of Lithium batteries.

After that rant, you've probably guessed; the battery died mid-video. The batteries I use are new this year. I don't leave without a fully charged battery in the body and one in my pocket. However, I did not get the battery changed and the imaging device rebooted until the balloons were too far away.

After the balloons were gone I returned to the pavilion where we will be having our Type-Out and typed my OTP for today. I generally get them in late and Daniel posts them the next day.

For all those in the U.S.A., I bid you all a most wonderful Independence Day.

Bill Mhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14649212489891769390noreply@blogger.com9tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8558523755501505700.post-39533102573916547042021-06-28T19:03:00.001-04:002021-06-28T19:03:40.253-04:00Cold Hard Type IV Has Arrived

Purchase Dead Keys Here

Bill Mhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14649212489891769390noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8558523755501505700.post-67122960117521355672021-06-23T06:05:00.002-04:002021-06-23T06:05:27.418-04:00It's Typing Season: This year it's a Type-Out, The Insurgency Lives On

Bill Mhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14649212489891769390noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8558523755501505700.post-47156220800368141312021-05-15T07:11:00.001-04:002021-05-15T07:14:15.909-04:00Looks like the folks at Google corrected the issues.
Seems things were corrected overnight. I noticed WP blogs were not affected. I did not know if or how to notify the bloggers I follow except to try and comment and post on mine, which would probably not be seen on some of the browsers.

In any case Blogger users would have found them locked out of their own blog unless they used an encrypted browser like Tor.

There is one advantage to social media; I could have sent a message to those bloggers which would be on my social media account.

Bill Mhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14649212489891769390noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8558523755501505700.post-38905182840041846762021-05-14T20:17:00.001-04:002021-05-14T20:17:08.021-04:00Google & Mozilla have things royally messed up with Blogger
I've tried to comment on blogs I follow that Mozilla and Google are blocking every blog as a deceptive site. I notified Mozilla via their banners. You may want to do do the same. That is if my blog post works. So far Blogger improvements, like most software 'improvements' are nothing but crap. I'll be nice and not describe things as I usually do off line or like when I was in radio...when the microphone is off.

More blogger bs. I thought one quick post since I'm still not over on WP yet. I've been too busy with other things over this past year to post even though I thought I'd have plenty of time to post during the pandemic.

First thing I find is the resize tool no longer is accurate. I have my blog set to match the original 750 pixels and my images sized so I can fit the typecast as its original size to fill the post width, nope. Original size goes past the width.

Also as normal Blogger adds a shadow of a grey line on the left of my typecast no matter how I edit it in GIMP.

There is no captioning tool. There is a non-working add text tool. Oh, I do try several browsers and OSs, and within Linux 5 different distros just for the fun of proving Blogger is a piece of.

I understand the typosphere is not as active as it once was. Blogger is part of the problem for people like me who do not like frustrations of faulty software.

In any case, I've been producing content and not posting it so I have something to post on WP if and when I ever get set up. WP is not without issue either. I already have WP via our typewriter group, but since I want to start my own blog I will need to create a new email and profile which I do not want to do unless I can get set up for self-hosting which will not happen as long as I live in my tiny house.

So I may decide to set up another email account, but I don't want to do. I have too many already and spend too much time gleaning useful email from the spam and other worthless email I receive.

I'll no longer frustrate myself or upset any readers of this blog who do not visit my blog to read my frustrations about Blogger.

This post will not be searchable from within the blog either since the labels setting no longer works.

Bill Mhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14649212489891769390noreply@blogger.com11tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8558523755501505700.post-79637469101066171082021-01-01T16:58:00.002-05:002021-01-01T16:58:44.166-05:00Start the year off with The Twilight Zone and a Typewriter
We've been watching the total series of one of my favorite shows from my childhood, The Twilight Zone.

I checked on line news, and found a photo of Rod Sterling at his typewriter.

Story

As far as blogging... As with typewriters all notebooks have their quirks. For Rhodia it is the covers on the Webnotes one. For the extra price it is not worth buying compared to the soft cover Rhodiarama. Both are casebound which makes them a good choice, and the Clairefontaine paper is hard to beat.

Both notebooks lay nice and flat and have ruled pages with line spacing of about 7mm. There are plenty of choices from Rhodia, plain paper, dots, lined, and quad ruled.

There are also plenty of sizes from pocket to large and assortment of binding styles. Overall a very nice product, and much better for the price than Moleskine.

I think I purchased this one in 2016 when we were traveling for my job interviews since most of the notes are of our travels and my thoughts on various employers.

There is still about 75% of the book unused. I will keep it for our next trip. I never used the pocket one.

I buy notebooks based on price and quality. Many times I will choose a cheaper price over a more expensive notebook even if the more expensive is better quality. I go for practical and utility more than fancy.

If there is bleed through on a notebook I use it with pencil and move on to a different brand when it is time for a new one. I prefer those made in the USA or Europe, but they are getting harder to find or more expensive or both.

What amazes me is that many others on the Fountain Pen Network also find they like the less expensive notebooks over expensive ones if they work with a fountain pen. The general criteria seem to be minimal to no feathering and no bleed through.
Audio level on the video is a bit weak.
I was disappointed with this journal. First thing I noticed was it came from Taiwan. I thought that might put it a notch above Piccadilly which is made in China, but not so. I don't like expensive journals that don't give me a big bang for my buck.

I first saw one of these when one of the fellows had one at one of our book store typewriter gatherings (now on hold because of stay at home orders and the virus). It looked like it would be a nice journal. I especially liked the page format with the date and numbers. Neither of these are killers for not buying a notebook. I've been manually numbering the pages and adding my date to an entry from way back when I was in school and all we had (at least in a small coal mine town) was the famous three ring binder or a spiral wound binder.
Later I graduated to Composition books.

I did some scanning of this journal and set it aside until it was time for this review which is not all that much of an objective review yet, is it not that I should or should not state my likes/dislikes and why?

I do these reviews without any outline or draft. I should really work from at least an outline, but I did not start that way. For this I don't want to change.

When I get through all the notebooks I review I'll do a summary that will be more organized with advantages and disadvantages of both. Again, these will be my view as I know others will have different views on some of the same brands of notebooks.

I know many readers of the blog as well as some locals who love Moleskine. I also know some who run from them instead of to them. That's fine. I used to run into burning buildings and think nothing of it. I still would if I were still in the FD.

I also know some readers and locals who do not journal. Some use plain old pads. Others use different forms of notebooks, and still others use only their PC.

What do notebooks, fountain pens, typewriters, and other methods of writing have in common? We all have our favorite.

I will measure typical page thickness of all journals.

Hopefully all the important points have been covered. I'm sure I missed something on this as well as my other journal review post.

I tried to compare the flatness of this one to the green book, but it'll take a video and more work. I may do a video after I do all the reviews. This brand has consistently laid flatter than any similarly bound journals I have used, yes, even the over priced Moleskine. The only side bound that lays flatter are the sewn and staple bound soft cover pocket journals such as a Field Notes, Cahiers, and these that were my go-to pocket notebook until I discovered the one I presently use that will be reviewed later.

These are quite comparable to Markings brand, but I don't know if I have any that are not fully used and packed. Wal-Mart and Staple's used to sell the Markings brand. There is no Staple's here, and our Wal-Marts don't carry Markings as they only sell the store brand which I found quite inferior to good journals. I have one, if I did not throw it in the trash.

The covers of these books measure 5.125 inches by 8 inches and the pages 4.750 inches x 7.750 inches.

These notebooks are often described as having a cloth cover. I do not know how old the ones are with cloth covers. I got my first on in 1972 from the Army. I don't remember the cover being different than the oldest one I have. I don't remember where I got that one. It may have been from the government or I may have gotten it when I worked in the Army Surplus store where we'd have gotten them on government auction. All of the covers are nice and seem like cloth. If it is, it is very very thin cloth. The oldest is the nicest. It may be cloth. They all seem more like embossed paper though.

I like that the covers are not too brightly or darkly colored, and I can write on them with a Sharpie or other felt tipped marker.

I'll be reviewing some Chinese and one from Taiwan that are cloth covered hard bound A5 notebooks.

The white sulphite paper is nothing different from 3 ring binder notebook paper or the paper found in many spiral bound notebooks and the black and white cardboard cover Composition Books. I have some of those Composition Books since high school (Hey! I'm an old guy. It won't be long I'll be out 50 years) that were stored in attics and basements, and the paper has never yet deteriorated. I guessing the paper is acid free since I have many other books and notebooks that have yellowed under those same conditions.

I have not had problems using a fountain pen with these notebooks. If the nib is too wet there is shadowing through to the back, but I seldom write on the back. I may use the pocket Moleskine I have and compare the two. I'd rather a plain page or a lined page though. Quad paper makes bleed though a bit harder to see.

For the ink feathering and bleed through I do not change scanner settings or edit the image files. Setting manipulation and file editing can make the ink look better and the bleed through lighter or even darker.

Overall these notebooks are very nice for what they cost, and the are nearly indestructible. I've not had any where the binding loosens or the pages fall out or come loose. I use these at home, in the garage, and out in the outdoors.

The Lillian Anderson Arboretum is not too far from home, and I visit often. It is like an outdoor classroom as I often run into students and instructors from Kalamazoo College when there. The Arboretum is fully owed and maintained by Kalamazoo College and connects to the Main Street Park (Oshetemo Twp. Park) also a wonderful place to go walking in the woods.
The title and all blogs on my blog list got turned into blue links.
As I test post Blogger bumps the titles to the most recent posts as my tests post.
I'm posting this one as a filler to go to the post from yesterday. I am working on using Word Press and kiss this platform goodbye for ever. I don't know how much support Blogger is getting. From what I read on tech sites; not much.
Linn
Ullmann, in an interview with Vogue, on her father Ingmar Bergman:

My father was a very disciplined and punctual man; it was
a prerequisite for his creativity. There was a time for everything:
for work, for talk, for solitude, for rest. No matter what time you
get out of bed, go for a walk and then work, he’d say, because the
demons hate it when you get out of bed, demons hate fresh air. So
when I make up excuses not to work, I hear his voice in my head: Get
up, get out, go to your work.

I thought the quote from Austin's blog might be appropriate for those who get stressed about working from home. We should not be going out to work, but some need to work from home. I know several programmers who have been working from home for a decade or so and they all love it. I've been doing some refreshing of my skills and may search for something on line to get a track record of generic programming rather than machine programming I've been doing for over 30 years. Then, I'm in no hurry. I have too much to do.

I enjoy Austin's Blog. I often think of the quote when out in the fresh air. I always get a boost when I could take a break and get outside when at work. I also do when at home. Now maybe more than ever. I appreciate that I can get out in the clean fresh air. Today the sounds and aromas of Spring were everywhere.

For those who want to hang around for a while I've included some images of the preserve down the street from me. I have been wanting some fog images and yesterday I stopped on my way home from the grocery store. The time was a bit later than I wanted, but conditions were really nice. The over night frost was just starting to melt off the trees and as I casually walked the trail I not only heard birds and squirrels I could hear the melting frost dropping.

The preserve is greening up nicely after the prescribed burn the first of second week end of March. I found out about it when all the work was done.

When I posted this the blog format was normal. I checked it and now it is a link for the title and all the blog list has changed from normal to links. I'm unsure, but I think it is in the copy of the quote at the top. I looked at the code quickly and don't notice anything abnormal. I may take a closer look later. Things change on Blogger as if it were owned, operated, and run on ... Well most readers of this blog know company and OS I do not like in the least.

One day I'll self host with Apache and use WordPress. If I only had room for servers in my tiny house. I may just change to WordPress since it is quite configurable. Still working on solving the issue with the weirdness of this page.
Other pages are fine.
I need to do some work on the margin release. It intermittently skips a space when activated.

When I first read The Unexpected Philosophy Icelanders Live By, I got the idea for this post I had more to write. That was last night. I could not remember the details as I started typing today. I don't write a draft or work from notes for my typecasts. Perhaps I should.

I know I was going to do more on some of the relaxation or simple living words I picked up on over the years. I'll need to do a bit of thinking and post on them later.

Seems most fit during this time as many are worried about the virus or having their routine life disrupted. I have a fire fighter mentality about a lot of things and normally that means I get quite militaristic and bossy. The other side of that is a different way of instantly adapting to the situation at hand. The adaptability part is what fits this situation.

Always prepared and the ability to adapt and execute have mostly gotten me through anything that came along. I like petta reddast, also. We may go through some very difficult things. I'm looking for everything to work out all right in the end.

Stay home, stay your distance, stay safe.

The original typecast idea centered on being thankful for different experiences, people, things, and life in general. Wow! how things have changed since November 2019. I could not think of a good title. I decided on 2 words of appreciation.

Since there are many behind the scene people out there that are staying on the job because they want to stay and some because they need to stay I wanted to post a bit so all who read this post may also thank or be thankful and show their appreciation for those still on the front lines.

I know I did not mention everyone. I did not mention the military personnel who are still on active duty or those recently called to activate. Those who are serving here in the U.S.A. and those deployed to other countries, yet not limited to the military of the U.S.A.; also including all those of other countries.

Our youngest is still flying helicopters in Afghanistan. Our hope is for him and his ground and air crew to be safe. Presently we don't hear much about the mid-East or any other location. Covid-l9 takes not only headlines, but all the news.

This is not the first disaster I've been through. It is the most wide-spread and serious of any during my life time. It is one time I am anxious to get back out on the ambulance and in other areas of response. I miss living at the fire station or even at one of the radio stations where we were up and on the air or on assignment for several days straight until one of us could take a nap.

At the same time I need to sit this one out. I am glad to be home where Mrs. M and I can lead almost a fully normal life. I'd hate to be out and bring into our house this silent and deadly enemy. This one is much more serious than when I was at 3 Mile Island.

We read more than usual. We watch more movies than usual. I get to type more. By typing I hope I'm improving my writing. I also hand write and hope I soon stop scribbling so I can at least do a pen cast and maybe some notebook / journal reviews.

Listen to the doctors and scientists and ignore most of what some politicians say. After all this virus did not start on a schedule nor will it end on one, especially a man made one.
The second typewriter I picked up about a week ago is an L.C. Smith
Super-Speed that is on the bench to be cleaned as soon as the weather gets a
bit warmer.

Spring, like Autumn, starts early. Then we have the normal Equinox a bit later. Even so this year Spring is earlier than it's been in 124 years. Hopefully the air will warm before long and I can get to work on some typewriters. Better yet, maybe the Covid-19 will die.

Speaking of Covid-19, it has even caused us to cease having our monthly typewriter gatherings. There were 2 since my last post, but I no longer have any images of the event.
