Hermes 3000 Director Elite and A Happy New Year

I'm awash in H3k machines.  The latest addition makes 7 in my collection surpassing my Skyriters!

This shows the one and only small blemish on the entire machine.  Can you find it?

Before cleaning.

After cleaning

It even came with both brushes

Taken before cleaning.  Dates the typewriter to 1964

This is where I work.  My new job came complete with my own lab.
It's fun enjoying a job.  I do not think any are as rewarding as when I was a firefighter.  Lowe's was a fun place, and I had another job or two in retail I liked, but none come close to broadcasting or teaching.  Sears service department was nice too.  What I like about my present job; it is quite a bit like working at a radio station.  I've got some cool projects I'm working on including new products and machines as well as adding a few more engineers and technicians.  I have music in the lab too, and one day I plan on installing a nice stereo and a typewriter.  I need a typewriter.  Perhaps one of my Royal HHs.

Here's a link to a tour.

  1. How did you clean the typeslugs? They look fantastic!

    1. Nick, I use a medium stiff toothbrush and acetone to scrub the slugs and then short bursts of compressed air to blow off the residue. Afterward I use a clean tooth brush to ensure all the loose dirt got brushed away. One word of caution if you use acetone. Do not get it (even the spray droplets) on any plastic or paint. I cover all but the typeslugs with aluminum foil. I'm not sure if I ever posted on it or not. I may need to do one. Cleaning only takes a few minutes if the covers are off of the machine.

    2. I just found some acetone so I'll be trying that next time instead of lighter fluid... your slugs are sparkling!

  2. Love your lab! Indeed that looks like fun. Glad to see you've found yourself somewhere you feel you belong.

On a side note, I can totally agree with your new years resolutions. Hope you the best TwentyFifteen!

  3. I love the typeface on the 3K. Good thing you didn't strip it for parts! I am awaiting my own H3K in the mail, though mine is a blue 3rd generation.

    1. I don't know what Blogger did with my first reply.
Scott Kernaghan has a nice post on the generation H3k you are getting.

I always inspect the slugs before using any machine that may be restoreable before turning it into parts. I'm something like 3 to 5 on junkers I bought to repair an H3k. If I could only find Hermes Knobs for the 2nd generation machines.

  4. Very nice typeface; congratulations on getting the H3K to work, and on your good new job.

I have a bamboo lazy susan in my workshop just like yours! (Except much dirtier.)

    1. The one I built is much cruder and dirtier. I came across this one in Wal-Mart for around $12.00 a few months ago.

    1. @ Dana & Grace,
This is perhaps the closest to factory fresh (cosmetically) of any of my H3k typewriters. The best 2 typers though are my first 2 non-working parts machines that turned out to be fine working machines with maybe the need for a good cleaning. My script and pica round body machines. I've found even the worst typer round body machine surpasses even the best of my square body machines. They are not squishy like the square ones. All are nice to use though.

    1. Thanks Vikram. I still need to do a 2014 in review. I hope to be more active blogging too.
