Smith-Corona Classic-12 Script Preview

After working in the yard Monday after dinner I decided to sit down with a Yuengling and relax, but a typewriter case sitting next to me kept calling.  So I picked it up, opened it and typed the above bit of nothingness.

I picked up this typewriter a few weeks ago and have yet to clean or do anything else with it.  I have others to post first, but somehow this one managed to bump its way up the posting priority list.

Seems to work fine except the lower part of the y and f are a bit faint.

More later.  I have a Royal Custom-III to finish, and Noiseless Model 7 and a Royal Crescent that all need cleaning first.

Sorry for the type / computer cast.  Wife's sleeping in the next room and I am too lazy to head to the garage to type.

Oh, Yuengling?  The oldest and largest brewery in the U.S.A. Surprising since I remember them as a small family owned and run brewery on the side of the hill on Mahantongo St in Pottsville, PA only about 1/2 hour drive from where I lived.
Problem in FL is the limited product, no Premium beer or Chesterfield Ale, only Lager.

  1. Very nice! So the streak continues. I have yet to see two SCM script typefaces that are exactly matched. This one has a different "I" which seems to be where the differences are most pronounced. Here's my roller call:

    1. I like the Hermes, Olivetti & Royal I the best myself.
I refer to your samples often and also Nick Beland's site:

  2. I have a script Olivetti Traveller Deluxe. Love the script; can't stand the typing action! I didn't know SC had script machines - guess I am back on the hunt!

    1. SCM has several script typefaces and that is kind of a problem if one finds a machine on line without a typing example and even then there are subtle differences like the I on mine.

  3. I agree with Florian, lovely cursive typeface.

  4. Sweet! I like that script. It is a nice variation. I have Hermes and Royal script machines and need another style like I need a hole in the head. Still, you've thrown temptation in my path.

  5. Congratulations on your first script typewriter! I'm a big fan of all Smith Corona's variations on the script typeface, and I wish you good luck in hunting down the others... there's this curly one Peter has that is particularly fetching :)

  6. Love this one! Script always seems so EXPRESSIVE to me.

Thanks for the inadvertent reminder that I need to go "under the hood" of my SCM electric with script to see if the motor drive belt needs replacing. Yes, the Smith-Corona script typefaces are cool.

Is the issue with slightly faint extended characters a common one? Would you bend the typeslugs a bit to correct this?

    1. When this machine hits the work bench I'm going to give everything a good cleaning and treat the platen to see if that makes all letters print correctly. If this platen stays hard I may send it to Ames before I try bending the slugs. I have bent and twisted slugs on other old machines to get the letters to align correctly.

    2. Strange how things change in just a few short weeks. As of 1 May 2012 Ames is out of the platen recovering business :(

  7. That typeface is gorgeous. I actually like my Olympia SF script typewriters, though I've found that the typeface looks a little bit too light with script--don't know if this is just because they need new ribbons.

I covet your SC Classic 12, though!

    1. Crystal, The Olympia should have be dark and clear whether script or not if the ribbon is fresh. All type will get lighter as the ribbon dries.

  8. A script SMC! All typewriters look prettier when they're in script :) I really need to get one!

  9. Wow, I love the script. I have the same typewriter without the script typeface. I was amazed at the condition mine was in when I found it. The only problem I have is the carriage return lever doesn't advance the platen. I can't seem to figure out what part I'm missing or maybe a spring has gone. I haven't been able to find a photo of the gear box either. Would it be possible to send a close up photo my way? I'd love to have this thing working 100%. Great blog Bill! Thanks!

    1. Steedan,
I will take some macros of the line-feed end of the platen and its associated gears, pawls and springs. It may be a few days until I get to do them.
